The remaining five candidates competing with Harland for the PFA Player of the Year were De Bruyne, Kane, Ödgön, Saka and Stones, with the 23-year-old Norwegian centre-forward emerging as the victor, having scored 52 goals and assisted nine in 53 matches across all competitions last season to help City win the Premier League, the FA Cup and the Champions League, making him a “Triple Crown winner! The “Triple Crown”. Harland is the second person to win the PFA Player of the Year award in his first season in England, following former Manchester United centre-forward Ruud van Nie.
After winning the award, Harland said: “I am honoured to receive this prestigious award. It’s a great feeling to be recognised by my competitors and I thank everyone who voted for me. It has been a memorable season for the team and for me personally. Stones, Rodney, Diaz and De Bruyne all deserve a place in the Team of the Year and I’m delighted that their efforts have been recognised. We created some incredible memories last season, but now we want to do it again this year. We have started the season well and still need to keep going.”
Manchester City’s Director of Football, Begiristain, said, “We are delighted for Harland to win this award, his goalscoring record last season was incredible and that alone shows that he is a special player whose impact on the pitch continues to grow. We’re sure he’ll get better, he’s already a world-class player. We are very proud of him and everyone at City is delighted for him!”
In fact, the remaining five candidates have also shone: De Bruyne (Manchester City), with 10 goals and 31 assists in 49 appearances for the club (in all competitions, below); Kane (Tottenham Hotspur, now playing for Bayern), with 32 goals and five assists in 49 appearances; and Ödgöl (Arsenal), with 15 goals and eight assists in 45 appearances.
